Info and application for Affiliate Fellows

Faculty, independent scholars, and graduate students are welcome to become affiliates to CSEAS@AUPP while undertaking research in Cambodia. Affiliate Fellows are provided with a workspace, access to Internet, library privileges, copy/printer privileges, and entrée to area academic resources and networks. Fellows also may be assisted by AUPP students for desk research, transcription, and interpretation. In return, we ask that Affiliate Fellows present their research at a public forum to the AUPP community at the end of their stay, acknowledge the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at American University of Phnom Penh in any resulting publications, and provide a copy of final research outputs for the AUPP library to add to our knowledge of the region.

Current and Past Fellows

CSEAS is honored and delighted to welcome Dr. Sothy Eng, Associate Professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, as Affiliate Fellow for Summer 2024!

Dr. Eng is affiliating with the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at American University of Phnom Penh while on sabbatical. During this time, he is working on his research focusing on a relationship-building theory, Critical Empathetic and Mindful Relations (CEMR), which he uses to guide his teaching.

In his teaching, Dr. Eng builds social capital among students by creating an environment that promotes a sense of belonging and encourages the building of social networks. As a result, students learn not only from the instructor but also from their classmates through sharing, openness, and vulnerability.

Dr. Eng’s work involves the use of social capital to guide his research, teaching, and programming. His research focuses on the role of social capital embedded in family’s socio-cultural beliefs and attitudes in facilitating healthy family dynamics and resilient child and adolescent development. His most recent research examines how informal preschools, such as home- and community-based preschools, not only support informed parenting and strong social networks but also mitigate harmful factors such as fatalistic beliefs, rigid gender attitudes, and family violence. This work supports policies that encourage community building and social cohesion that helps contribute to overall societal well-being. Dr. Eng also serves in the Editorial Board of the Journal of Interpersonal Violence.

Dr. Eng received his B.S. in Psychology from the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP), and his M.S. and Ph.D. in HDFS from Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX. He spent one year as a Postdoctoral Fellow at UCLA’s California Center for Population Research before starting his faculty position at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA, in the Comparative and International Education program, where he served from 2011-2018.

The Center for Southeast Asian Studies is proud to announce two Affiliate Fellows this summer! The two researchers are working together at the National Archives of Cambodia on a nomination to include the collection from the French colonial period (Fonds de la résidence supérieure du Cambodge) as part of the UNESCO Memory of the World Registry.

Dr. Tara Tran is supervising the application process. She is a historian of empire, gender, and race in Asia, with a focus on Cambodia. She completed her doctoral work at Johns Hopkins University and is currently a faculty member at the American University of Phnom Penh, where she emphasizes postcolonial and feminist approaches to history.

Olufemi Adewuyi is the research assistant for the project and will be based in Phnom Penh for the summer months. He is from Oxford, England and recently finished his undergraduate course at the University of Manchester in Modern History with Economics. His future plans include studying for the master’s degree in archives and records management at the University of Liverpool.

CSEAS hosts throughout the year visiting researchers working on Southeast Asia as Affiliate Fellows, providing access to AUPP library resources and databases, connections to our diverse networks, and office space on our beautiful campus.
